author(s): tylavsky, frances a; han, luhang; taylor, lauren m sims; mason, w alex; carroll, kecia n; bush, nicole r; lewinn, kaja z; melough, melissa m; hartman, terryl j; zhao, qi | abstract: the objective of this study was to calculate an oxidative balance score (obs) utilizing diet and lifestyle information collected from 1322 women during the second trimester of pregnancy in the conditions affecting neurocognitive development and learning in early childhood study. an energy-adjusted obs was calculated using nutrient information from a food frequency questionnaire (ffq), lifestyle measures, and plasma folate and vitamin d levels. using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator method, 91 food items from the ffq were selected and they accounted for 82% of the variance in the obs, with cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruits, fruit juice, and coffee being among the highest anti-oxidant predictors, and red meats and alcohol among the highest pro-oxidant contributors. urinary f2-isoprostane, an objective indicator of oxidative stress, was lower with increasing obs quintiles in a stairstep manner (p for trend = 0.0003), suggesting the possible utility of the obs as an indicator of oxidative stress. the obs was moderately correlated with the healthy eating index (correlation coefficient = 0.6076), suggesting it provides a distinct measure of a healthy diet. in conclusion, the obs may serve as a valid reflective indicator of urinary f2-isoprostanes and an epidemiological tool to inform intervention studies, in order to minimize oxidative stress during pregnancy.

the number of gout patients of japanese people increased 5.12-fold from 1986 to 2022 (1986: 0.255 million; 2022: 1.306 million). the aim of this article is to suggest what micronutrient intake is important for the prevention of gout in japanese people in 2022 referencing the results of clinical research reported. the author used the data of the comprehensive survey of living conditions in japan for the number of gout patients (1986-2022) and the data of the national health and nutrition survey in japan (1946-2022) for the intake of micronutrients. micronutrient intake of japanese people in 2022 were compared with those in 2019. the relationship between the number of gout patients and micronutrient intake in japanese people was examined. the daily intake of micronutrients of japanese people in 2022 were evaluated using dietary reference intakes. the daily intake of vitamin e, vitamin k, and pantothenic acid of japanese people in 2022 were higher compared to those in 2019, respectively. whereas the daily intake of vitamin a, vitamin d, vitamin b2, niacin, vitamin b6, folate, vitamin b12, vitamin c, sodium, salt, calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, copper, and zinc of japanese people in 2022 were lower compared to those in 2019. the daily intake of vitamin b1 of japanese people in 2022 was the same as that in 2019. the daily intake of vitamin a, vitamin d, vitamin e, vitamin b1, vitamin b2, folate, vitamin b12, vitamin c, salt, calcium, iron, and copper were negatively correlated with the number of gout patients, respectively. the daily niacin intake was positively correlated with the number of gout patients. modification of micronutrient intake for the prevention of gout in japanese people (especially adults) in 2022 is suggested as follows: limiting or decreasing intake of sodium and salt; decreasing intake of niacin; decreasing or pay attention to not to excessive intake of vitamin k, pantothenic acid, vitamin b12, phosphorus, and copper; increase intake of vitamin a, vitamin d, vitamin e, vitamin b1, vitamin b6, folate, calcium, potassium, and magnesium; increase intake of vitamin b2 in japanese men (aged 15-59 years) and women (aged 15-49 years), vitamin c in japanese men (aged 20-59 years) and women (aged 20-49 years), iron in japanese men (aged 20-59 years) and women (aged 20-69 years, ≥ 75 years), and zinc in japanese men (aged ≥ 20 years) and women (aged 20-69 years, aged ≥ 80 years).

background colistin is a polymyxin antibiotic which has been used for treatment of gram-negative infections, but it was withdrawn due to its nephrotoxicity. however, colistin has gained its popularity in recent years due to the reemergence of multidrug resistant gram-negative infections and drug-induced toxicity is considered as the main obstacle for using this valuable antibiotic. results in total, 30 articles, including 29 animal studies and one clinical trial were included in this study. these compounds, including aged black garlic extract, albumin fragments, alpha lipoic acid, astaxanthin, baicalein, chrysin, cilastatin, colchicine, curcumin, cytochrome c, dexmedetomidine, gelofusine, grape seed proanthocyanidin extract, hesperidin, luteolin, lycopene, melatonin, methionine, n-acetylcysteine, silymarin, taurine, vitamin c, and vitamin e exhibited beneficial effects in most of the published works. conclusions in this review, the authors have attempted to review the available literature on the use of several compounds for prevention or attenuation of colistin-induced nephrotoxicity. most of the studied compounds were potent antioxidants, and it seems that using antioxidants concomitantly can have a protective effect during the colistin exposure.
